AWS Relational Database Service

Amazon Web Services offers several services for your data requirements. One of the most popular options is a fully managed relational database management system (RDBMS) that allows you to use AWS to host several different types of relational databases. Relational databases allow for the organization of a collection of data in a hierarchy that consists of databases, tables, records, and cells that contain data that can easily and efficiently be accessed, searched, and indexed.

AWS also offers data services that are outside of the RDBMS architecture, like DynamoDB (a No-SQL based system), RedShift (a data warehousing system), and ElastiCache (an in-memory caching system) to help optimize and organize any data that you may need to manage.

AWS RDS is similar to other AWS services in that it is easy to get started with; since it is a fully managed service , there is not a lot of work to be done to keep it up and running after configuration. This allows you to focus on the management of the data within the database rather than the management of the database service and server. Amazon has designed this service with scalability and availability in mind and although I’ll be covering simple, single availability-zone installations in this chapter, I’ll look at the highly available fault-tolerant and recovery benefits in later chapters in the book.
